(11/13) Friday- Several months ago we were driving in Goshogawara and Eric noticed a restaurant that looked really interesting. We could see the cooks cooking up a storm in the middle of the restaraunt. We really wanted to try it but we had no idea what it was. At our lask Ekiwa class we were talking about eating out and we asked for suggestions. This mystery restaurant came up and we found out that it is a very good Udon shop. So tonight we decided to check it out, and it was certianly delicious... and very cheap :)
After dinner Eric dropped me off at Katie's house so I could head off to Towada with Katie, Hal and John for the Mapple Marathon. We had a long, but fun, sing-a-long kind of car ride to the town of Towada were we stayed at the 'Super Hotel' before our race. Our bedroom was much like a cruise ship room, and the bathroom was much like an airplane lavatory.. but it served it's purpose.
(11/14) Saturday - This morning was the Mapple Marathon. Although it was called a Marathon, the longest race was a 5k. Katie and I ran the 3k (which was the longest race that women could run). Katie did an excellent job, and I unfortunately did not get to finish. It was a very gross rainy day.. which means a bad day for my knee, and the race course was very hilly. Right at the first hill my knee started to give way and make lots of gross noises so I decided that I needed to stop running before I hurt something. So I started walking and apparently limping. The medical team pulled me from the race and told me I was not allowed to continue :( It was very hard to explain to them (without a word of English) that contrary to their belief, I did not need to go to the hospital.. I just needed to sit down with some ice. But in the end I won, and was able to meet back up with my friends. When you turn in your time chip you get a raffle ticket, the prizes were Green Tea, a box of tissues or vegetables. Katie and I both won vegetables so we went to the booth to pick them up and discovered that they were giving us 8 heads of cabbage each! We did not have room for them all in our car (that was already bursting at the seams) so we convinced them to give us 4 total. After the race we went to an incredible onsen in Towada. The outdoor portion was absolutely beautiful, complete with giant sized pots (for 1 person) to sit in, and an onsen with hot stones on the bottom deep enough to walk laps in. Although my running plan was foiled (and will be for the next week or so) I still had a great time.
(11/15) Sunday- Today was another gross rainy day :( We went to Hirosaki anyway and got some errands taken care of. We then met up with the Elliot's (missionaries from Canada who live in Aji) and we went to a Bible Study/ Church service with them. It was great to meet more foreigners who live in our prefecture. The service was not quite what I was hoping for, as the only music was acapella hymns... not quite the contemporary worship service I am used to.
(11/16) Monday- Today there was lots and lots of hail! I hope it becomes snow and continues so we can go skiing soon!
(11/18) Wednesday- The warm beaches of Thailand are sure sounding nice right about now. I cannot wait to see my family! Only 53 days!
