This is the halfway point of Eric's contract....which should mean that we are halfway done with our time in Japan; however, as this realization came closer, we decided we weren't ready for that yet! Eric re-contracted, which means we are staying for a second year!!!!
Initially we had planned to come to Japan for only 1 year because that was all the time we had. However, a few months back I decided to postpone starting medical school until the Fall of 2011 (of course that is assuming that I get in) which means that we have another year free!
In looking at our options we realized that one option was to go home and live with one of our parents and work whatever job we were fortunate enough to find due to the economic state and pay out of pocket for health insurance... which doesn't sound like a fantastic option... however it would mean that we would be able to spend time with our family and friends that we miss so much.
The other option is to stay in Japan where we are happily living on our own, Eric has a great job, we have awesome health insurance and we own our car, and car insurance isn't too bad and we can experience so much more of Japan and other parts of Asia as well; however, I still don't have a job and we don't get to see our family and friends.
We decided that overall the best decision was to stay in Japan! We are very happy with our decision and so excited to see what else Japan has in store for us (and hopefully that includes a job for me). The only thing about staying that I am not excited about, is passing the Japanese driving test. It's a written and performance test! I also will be re-taking the MCAT this summer, in Tokyo. It's in English of course, and will be exactly the same as if I were taking it in the USA, it will just be a little more difficult to get to.
So he we are, 1/4 of our way through our stay! Please know that you are always welcome to come visit, our door is always open to you!
