Christmas is finally here! Unfortunately we aren't spending Christmas with our extended family, but it gives us time just the two of us for our first married Christmas as well, so we're trying to focus on that. Eric had to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day since they are not recognized holidays in Japan. On Christmas Eve we would normally be at the Taylor family gathering in Peoria, AZ enjoying time with aunts, uncles, cousins and grand parents and of course the Mexican Food Potluck. My Mom mailed us ingredients for Green Chili Burros in advance so we had a very special mexican food dinner tonight, complete with: green chili burros, beans, guacamole, chips and salsa and Dr. Pepper! It was mighty delicious! After dinner we opened presents and then continued our game of Monoply!
This is our little Christmas Tree :)
On Christmas I spent most of the day on skype talking to friends and family from home. It was so nice to hear so many familiar voices! I wanted to pick up some Sushi for lunch for Eric, but when I got to the grocery store, there was no sushi! That has only happened 1 other time in the previous 5 months and that's when the fishermen couldn't go out the night before because of a storm. I was a little confused, and then I looked at what was in it's place... Fried Chicken. The Japanese really do eat Fried Chicken on Christmas because they think that's how the American's celebrate. I was shocked, and slightly entertained... so I gace in. We had Fried Chicken for lunch on Christmas. I really would like to know where this whole tradition started! We decided to go out for dinner, so we drove to Hirosaki for dinner and a movie. We enjoyed more delicious Japanese Curry at CoCo's Curry House, they even gave us Christmas presents! Then we went to a movie. We discovered a movie theathre in Hirosaki that has current American Movies in English, and an online movie schedule! When we bought our tickets to see Avatar they asked us where we would like to sit, so we picked out seats and then when it was time to enter the theatre they allowed small sections in at a time, we felt a lot like we were boarding an airplane!! It was so fun to see a current movie, and we saw lots of enticing previews so I am sure we will be back soon! We didn't realize Avatar was 3 hours long when we decided to go to the 8 pm showing, so by the time the movie was over, and we made the hour and a half drive home, we had quite a late night!
The day after Christmas we slept until noon when the phone rang! Rachel and Charlie were calling us from Colorado so we got on skype! Since Rachel's Mom was in town they had her Mac, so we were able to video chat! It was sooo wonderful to see them!! After we talked to them for about an hour we called our parents, and then played games and watched movies all day, it was such a nice relaxing day!
Sunday was our 6 Month Anniversary! We recently got a flier in the mail for a new restaurant opening in Aomori city, this place called TONY ROMA's!!! So we drove to Aomori city and had a nice night out. The main walkway through all of the shops is covered, so even when it's snowing you can enjoy walking around outside. We were out and about for almost 4 hours... it was SO nice to get some fresh air! Then we headed to Tony Roma's for dinner. We parked in an elevator parking garage which was a first time experience for both of us. It is a very innovative way to park a lot of cars in a small amount of space! Dinner was absolutely delicious!! We thouroughly enjoyed having buffalo wings, spinach and artichoke dip, steak, fresh veggies, free refills on soda, forks and knives, we even paid at our table, and there was tv on in the bar.. it was like we walked into America! It was such a fantastic night out!
Eric worked on Monday.. and only Monday!! In Japan Dec 29-Jan 3 are National Holidays, so Eric is on a nice "staycation" right now!! It's a pre-vacation, vacation. Time to rest and relax and get ready for Thailand, with only 2 days of work next week before we go!!
Tuesday and Wednesday we stayed home and watched movies, we set a new record on Tuesday, 4 in 1 day!! We have also been having a wide variety of food! I have been tired of cooking and eating the same kinds of foods every day, and it's entirely my fault since I do the shopping and most of the cooking... so I made a change!
Monday Lunch: Mexican- Bean Burritos
Monday Dinner: American- Macaroni and Cheese
Tuesday Lunch: Japanese: Tofu and noodles
Tuesday Dinner: Thai: Homemade Thai Curry
Wednesday Lunch: Chinease: Fried Rice
Wednesdy Dinner: Italian: Pasta and marinara sauce!
