Facts about Japan

First, lets play a little game! I just took this fun facts quiz online and i scored an 8/10 and I live in Japan! Let's see how you do! And now, here is a list of fun facts about Japan, some of them you probably know, others I didn't even know until I started searching online :)

Japan is made up of over 3000 islands!

The area of Japan is 145,925 sq miles, but less than 30% of the land is habitable.
The are of California is 163,696 sq miles

The population of Japan is 127,380,000.
The population of California is 36,961,664, making it the most populated state in the nation.

So that means that in Japan there are approximately 4 times as many people in less than 30 % of the amount of space of California.

Japan has over 200 active volcanoes, one of which is Mt. Fuji which is in Tokyo.The drivers seat is on the right hand side of the car, and we drive on the left side of the road.

Japan has more flavors of Pepsi and Kit-Kat than any other country in the world, including the United States.

Japan consumes more bananas per person than any other country in the world.Aomori Prefecture, where we live, consumes more bananas per person than any other prefecture in Japan.

Jesus's grave is in Shingo, Aomori Japan! Along with many other numerous locations in the world of course.

Shinto and Buddhism are the 2 most commonly practiced religions in Japan.

Did you know that there are over 330,000 Jehovah's Witnesses in Japan; yes they go door to door, even in the country side. We had 2 sets of visitors on Wednesday alone!

Many Japanese teachers describe their students as lazy and poorly behaved, I think they should teach in America for a few days, they would have a lot more respect for how hard their students work!

There are 3 replicas of the Statue of Liberty in Japan, one of which is at the same latitude as the Statue of Liberty in N.Y.C.
Raw horse meat is a very popular dish in Japan. Did you know that people still eat Whale in Japan as well? In fact you can get a whale burger in the food court of one of our local malls :/ The whaling companies claim they are performing research, but the meat ends up available to the public.

Japan imports nearly 85% of Jamaica's annual coffee production!

The population growth rate of Japan is -0.2 %

The life expectancy at birth is 82 years, in the US it is currently 78 years.

Japan has a literacy rate of almost 100%, and formal education is only required through Jr. High.

The national sport of Japan is Sumo wrestling, but baseball is a close 2nd favorite nationwide.

Japan is the world's largest consumer of Amazon rain forest timber.

Geisha means "person of the arts" and the first geisha were actually men.

There are no 24 hour ATMs in Japan (closed on holidays and many only open during normal bank hours). I have NEVER seen a drive up ATM either.

Here is something that was a big surprise to me: A peace treaty to formally end WWII has still not been signed because Russia and Japan are still "at war" over who a section of islands belong to!

And finally, one that is frustrating to the foreigner who loves organization; streets in Japan do not have names, only highways. We give directions like "Turn left after the 3rd vending machine and continue on the road until you pass a blue house, then turn right... " I'll get used to eventually!

    This was very enlightening and I'm glad I finally took time to read it and take the quiz!
    I think I got alot of questions right by just educated guessing but I know I don't know the names of all the islands, the renewable resources, and the rainy season (June?). However, if this was not multiple choice I totally would have gotten every question wrong!
