Japan Week 36

April 5- 11, 2010

Tuesday April 6th was the end of Passover which meant that after sundown we could have a delicious dinner with just about anything we wanted! We were scheduled to start practicing on Tuesday night with the Japanese Drum Corps that we joined, but we decided to wait until next week so that we could end Passover properly! Eric has been eying a piece of Chocolate Banana Cake from the bakery at the new grocery store for weeks and of course he couldn't have it during passover so, I got it for him to have today to celebrate the ending of passover, he was sure happy when I pulled it out of the fridge :) I got myself a piece of Strawberry Kiwi cake as well, both were full of fresh fruit and completely delicious! For dinner tonight we had home-made curry served over rice, and it was a nice treat after a very limited diet over the last week. I am so proud that Eric made it through Passover here without cheating even once! We obviously ate all of our meals at home, although that's not too different than normal for us, because avoiding soy sauce, tofu and rice in a Japanese restaurant is nearly impossible!

Eric and I were prepared for a busy week because I had a dermatology appointment in Hirosaki on Monday, then we had planned to drive to Goshogowara on Tuesday for Taiko Drumming Practice and I had written down that we also had our Eikaiwa English club on Wednesday, and then with Japanese tutoring on Thursday it was going to be a pretty full week, but we skipped Taiko and we didn't actually have English club, it's next week, so we had a surprising amount of time to rest and relax at home. It was a nice surprise for sure!

One of the things Eric frequently misses from home is ordering Wings from the pizza shop down the street from his condo! Fortunately we have found a remedy and have started cooking them at home, it sure is a lot more work and they are never quite as good as when you order them, probably because they are not deep fried, but Eric made some this week that came impressively close to the real deal, thank in part to some wing sauce that the Easter Bunny sent! Don't those look pretty good for home-made buffalo wings! They were "finger lickin' good"!

We tried two new flavors of Kit-Kat this week, well really Eric tried two and I only ate one of them, smelling the 2nd was enough for me!
The top Kit-Kat is "Yamagato Sakuranbo" which is Japanese Cherry Flavor, it is sold during the Spring Time in honor of the beautiful Japanese Cherry Blossoms which we will see in a few weeks! It is absolutely delicious in my opinion! I couldn't read the bottom flavor because it is written in Kanji (instead of Hirigana) and I apparently looked at the picture too quickly; I thought it was mango and apple, but it's Carrot and Apple! It's supposed to taste like a vegetable drink, like v-8! I passed, it smelled kind of like apple juice but I really didn't feel the need to consume the carbs and such form Chocolate that was tainted with vegetable flavors. Eric finished it, and said he would eat another one if we had it.

We had a fairly quiet weekend as the weather was pretty crummy again. On Saturday we met up with some of our fellow Americans and we went to Aomori to walk the course for the driving exam and take a few pointers from a friend who took it last year. The driving test is given on a closed course and you must memorize the map, because they don't administer tests on the weekend you can walk the course to help you memorize all of the turns. It was super helpful and I'm really glad we did it. I took video so we can study from it, hopefully that will help too. According to the US consulate only 1 in 3 Americans can past the test, and like I said before many of the JET's have had try it 5 or 6 times before they have passed. Eeks! Our back up plan if we cant pass is to buy motorized scooters, there is no practical portion for a scooter license, just a written test! I'm sure we'll be fine eventually!

The weather was a bit more normal this week, finally! We had a few flurries here and there but nothing stuck, we're getting lots of rain, afterall: "April Showers Bring May Flowers"! I'm very excited to see the Japanese Cherry Blossoms, especially in Hirosaki Castle Park, I hear they are beautiful! Our Temperatures are still in the 40's but it's getting warmer slowly.
