Japan Week 47

June 21-27, 2010

Monday in Japan is Sunday in America... which for this week means we started with Father's Day! It's really hard to be away from family and friends on holidays. Here are a few photos for our Dad's. We hope you smiled today : )

The photo below is my all-time favorite of me and my Daddy! I sure do miss those days!

Fortunately we also got to start this week with a day off in exchange for Eric working on Saturday. We were still completely exhausted from Tokyo, Disneyland, not sleeping Friday night and Eric was even worse off because he worked outside all day Saturday and got really burned! We spent some time on Skype with our families, watched movies, enjoyed the rain and I started my Med School application. I know the process is long and complicated, but when I downloaded the 75 page instruction manual for the online application, it felt very much like a 2x4 to the face! Fortunately the instructions spell out the answer to EVERY question, even one's like: What City were you born in; This is the city listed on your birth certificate, as in, the location of the hospital or facility in which your birth mother gave birth to you.... answers like that. They've made it fool proof. That made me feel a lot better, now I know I don't need to read all 75 pages!

"Sure, After the MCAT", has been my answer to most questions recently; other than, "How is studying?". On Tuesday when Eric headed back to work I started to tackle my "After the MCAT" to-do list. For the past month or so, anytime anyone has mentioned something to me or I've thought of something I could, should, must do I immediately made a decision, now or after the test, and 99.9% of the time it was postponed until now. It was so nice to get going on this list and get things taken care of! I spent the morning on the phone with 3 universities getting my transcripts sent to AMCAS for my application, it was much more of a hassle than I expected, but it's done :) I also rejoined Taiko practice this week, it was so good to be back!

Look at this lovely beverage I had today:
Iced Cocoa. . . I mean Cacoa, wait which is it?? How is the same word spelled differently on the same label?? (Below "ICED COCOA" it says "The perfect mixture of the milk and cacoa.") I don't understand why I can't find a job in editing, there is certainly plenty to be done.

Wednesday I took the driving test, and failed. I was so disappointed! I knew it was pretty likely that I would fail only because according to the government the average American takes 6 tries to pass; but recently our friend passed on his first try and it only took Eric 2 tries. It wouldn't be so upsetting except for the fact that it takes an entire day because of the location and the bureaucracy of it all, and to make matters worse Eric AND his supervisor had to take vacation time to take me. I rescheduled for July 5th and I'm taking our tutor/barber who has Monday's off so Eric and his supervisor don't have to take vacation. I REALLY hope I pass next time!

We also had our English club on Wednesday, it's so much fun to see everyone and I really enjoy getting to interact with them! We seem to always talk about travel, but that's fine by me! We volunteered to help our friends Miyo and Shu with a craft fair (kind of like the Tempe Arts Festival) that they host here in town in a few weeks, we're very excited to see it!

Thursday I had training for my new work-from-home tutoring job! It went very well and it seems like it should be fun! I worked on my application the rest of the day and we had Japanese tutoring at night, it feels so good to be studying Japanese again, I feel like I've fallen so far behind.

Friday I worked on my application all day and we headed to Hirosaki after work for Anniversary present shopping and dinner! I can't believe we're celebrating a wedding anniversary already, where did this year go???

Eric took this picture of the sunset on Mt. Iwaki on the way home. I love the reflection on the water in the rice fields and the whirling clouds, and how the sun appears to be rolling down the mountain. Good work Eric!We also stopped by the rice field where Eric helped to plant awhile back, it has grown so much! We drove out on a small access road and were totally surrounded by rice, and frogs! This is what it's like in our town, it's just a little different than Phoenix and New York City! Last week on our journey home from the night bus we saw a sign for a beautiful lake in a neighboring town so I got some directions from our friend who lives in the area and we hung out there on Saturday. The lake is called Fujimiko and the place where we were is called Tsuru no Maichi. It is the longest wooden bridge in Japan and it spans the lake between the hotel and a very fantastic playground, that embraces the old style roller slides. We were also excited to see cranes, but they apparently are in cages, which we didn't look for, but the lake and the bridge were really beautiful!
We also went into Goshogawara in an attempt for me to find the last item on my Anniversary shopping list, which didn't work out :/ We did get some other things though, and we saw the new version of my truck! I couldn't believe it! I certainly miss the abilities of my truck when I struggle with our matchbox style car in the winter, but I would never in a million years be able to park Monster in Japan. I bought a Cactus in a Cup! It reminds me of home so much! He needs a name. . . any suggestions?
Sunday was our One Year Wedding Anniversary! I can't believe it! We had a nice morning at home and then we went to Aomori city to have a special dinner at Tony Roma's. It was so nice to have delicious bread, and steak and a really nice night out together, it was a very special treat! Here's to many more wonderful years together!
